Free Concert Honors the Legacy of John Coltrane, Fats Waller, and Mahalia Jackson
BIRMINGHAM, MI - Birmingham First United Methodist Church will host On Legends: A Night of Music That Changed the World on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 7:30 PM, featuring a powerful tribute to three of the most influential artists in jazz, gospel, and American music: John Coltrane, Fats Waller, and Mahalia Jackson.
This special event will showcase the talents of Alvin Waddles, Rosa Warner-Jones, and Blue Note recording artist Dave McMurray, three renowned local musicians who will bring these musical legends to life through an evening of stirring performances.
A Tribute to Three Musical Icons
John Coltrane: The Visionary of Jazz – Few artists revolutionized jazz like John Coltrane. With his deep spirituality and relentless pursuit of new sounds, Coltrane transformed the saxophone into an instrument of profound expression. His groundbreaking albums, including A Love Supreme and Giant Steps, reshaped jazz harmony and improvisation, influencing generations of musicians. His music was more than just entertainment—it was a journey into the depths of the soul. Dave McMurray, a dynamic saxophonist and Blue Note recording artist, will pay tribute to Coltrane’s enduring legacy, reminding us of the raw power and beauty of his sound.
Fats Waller: The Heartbeat of Swing – Long before jazz clubs buzzed with bebop, Fats Waller was laying the foundation with his infectious rhythms and dazzling piano technique. A master of stride piano and a beloved entertainer, Waller brought humor, charm, and virtuosity to American music. With hits like Ain’t Misbehavin’ and Honeysuckle Rose, he made jazz accessible and joyful while influencing future jazz pianists with his technical brilliance. Detroit’s own Alvin Waddles, known for his electrifying piano playing, will bring Waller’s spirit to life in a performance that will have toes tapping and hearts soaring.
Mahalia Jackson: The Queen of Gospel—No voice in gospel music was more powerful than that of Mahalia Jackson. Her rich, soul-stirring voice carried messages of faith, hope, and justice, inspiring audiences worldwide—including Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who often requested her to sing before his speeches. Songs like Move On Up a Little Higher and Take My Hand, Precious Lord became anthems of both worship and the civil rights movement. The incomparable Rosa Warner-Jones will honor Jackson’s legacy, delivering performances filled with the same passion and conviction that made Mahalia a legend.
