A Special Distinction for Space 4 Art

Clubs and Organizations

January 13, 2024

From: Space 4 Art

Space 4 Art is proud to announce that our major community initiative for 2024 - a yearlong effort to engage the community in the design of a large-scale, community-based Arts Center on Market Street — has been chosen as an Impact project by the World Design Capital 2024. Our project, titled “Co-Creating A Community-Based Arts Center,” is one of only 12 Arts and Culture Impact projects to be supported throughout the year by WDC 2024’s Design Action Network.

WDC 2024 is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for our region to accelerate the exchange of ideas and create opportunities for transformative change. This year marks the first time a U.S. city and binational region (San Diego/Tijuana) has been selected.

We encourage you to read more about World Design Capital 2024 and all the ways it will benefit our region in the coming year. Watch this space throughout 2024 for more updates about Space 4 Art’s project and the larger WDC 2024 impact on the San Diego/Tijuana region. Stay tuned for an exciting year!

A key advocate for the kind of positive community change orchestrated by WDC 2024 is veteran urban planner and S4A board member Michael Stepner. He recently co-authored an OpEd piece in the San Diego Union-Tribune regarding the need to accept necessary changes that will lead to more quality housing in San Diego. Mike served as San Diego’s first City Architect from 1988 to 1992.

“For the future of our communities, our economy, and especially our children, we should accept the need for much more housing and embrace the necessary changes, subject to quality planning.”

A founding board member of S4A, Mike inspires and motivates us, and shares our vision for intelligent, humanity-centered design in the SD/TJ region!

Thank you to all our donors for helping us Bridge the Gap in 2023! During our year-end campaign, we raised a total of $14,271. You might recall that $93 was the daily gap between what we earned via the affordable rents we collect and what we spent on general operations, educational programs, maintenance, and more.

With that $14,271, our generous donors covered 153 days of our daily gap in 2023! Thank you so much for supporting our mission and goals.
