Introducing MAIA and PORTIA
Things have been busy as usual at AAE. Today, we introduce two new intakes, Maia and Portia. Sadly, their elderly owner was experiencing health issues, and as a result, the horses' health had been neglected. They were in dire need of rescue, and a nearby animal control reached out to see if we could assist.
MAIA
Maia is an older (~25 year old) Arabian-type mare. This sweet girl was not easy to catch, but once haltered, she was as sweet as pie. Maia loaded on the trailer like she'd done it a million times. She was being fed (poor quality) hay, and her lil' body was withering away. She was malnourished and hungry. Her hooves were much in need of a trim, and she simply hadn't had any basic care for some time. Though family stepped in to help mom with their care, they didn't have the knowledge or resources to provide what with Maia needed, and they were so grateful AAE was able to assist.
Once at AAE, Maia was started on pelleted feed (much easier to process), and a refeeding program consistent with UCD's protocol for refeeding emaciated horses. An intake exam was scheduled to evaluate her overall health. Fortunately, so far her lab results have been fairly normal, and her organs appear to be functioning well despite her age and body condition. Maia was a champ for the farrier, and she has been a very sweet, ol' gal. She will have dental work, vaccines, deworming, and a microchip as soon as she gains a bit of weight.
Once Maia's condition has improved and she's been evaluated more, she'll be available for adoption. Keep an eye on the website.
In the meantime, Maia needs a sponsor (or a team of sponsors) to help support her care costs. Learn more about becoming a sponsor.
PORTIA
Portia is a younger mare that lived in the paddock next to Maia. Family thinks she's an Arab/Quarter Horse. Portia was in better condition than Maia, but thin and in need of basic care. Family said she wasn't very friendly, and she had not been haltered for quite a while. It took a very long time to earn her trust and halter her. Once the halter was on, she was soft, responsive, and kind. She had a moment of hesitation at the trailer, then loaded willingly with Maia already inside. While working to halter her, she was very curious, engaging, and quite sweet with a bit of sass, too.
At AAE, Portia's personality has continued her blend of sweet and sass. Her lil' lips wrinkle when someone comes around to say hello, but it's mostly a bluff. Once she's given a little TLC, she comes around, warms up, and enjoys the interaction. Her first round with the farrier was a no go. She has a dental appointment, and her hooves will be trimmed while she's sedated. Poor girl looks and acts as if she hasn't had much hoof handling. She's not a super confident mare. It's no wonder, we were told a past person in these horses lives was not very kind to them. Portia is a work in progress, but no doubt, she'll come around as she's showered with kindness (and handlers employ consistent boundaries). Portia is scheduled for her dental, vaccines, and microchip...and hoof care, too. Once her condition has improved and she's been evaluated more, she'll be available for adoption. Keep an eye on the website.
In the meantime, Portia needs a sponsor (or a team of sponsors) to help support her care costs. Learn more about becoming a sponsor.
We moved to the new location and are almost done putting the finishing touches on the store. Stay tuned for our new address and the grand re-opening event!
We look forward to having our wonderful shoppers (that's you!) experience the store!
HONORING OUR ICONIC AMIGO
With immense sadness, we share our iconic Amigo passed last month. This big, sweet, loving dude was one of AAE's most loved and revered ol' guys. Amigo was the gentlest of gentleman, ever. He introduced soooo many new volunteers to the greatness of horses. Sadly, he colicked. He had a large obstruction or mass, and it was evident he was ready to go. At his age and condition (arthritis, etc), surgery was not a viable option. We had to make the heartbreaking decision to help him across the Rainbow Bridge.
Amigo came to AAE with two buddies from a neglect situation way back in January of 2018. His condition was the worst we had ever experienced at AAE. Not only a literal bag of bones hidden by the shag-like rug of a coat, Amigo was covered with ticks. We didn't think he would survive. Though emaciated and starving, he had a heart of gold and a very strong will. Everyone who met him connected with this guy and fell in love. He had that "thing", and everyone saw it.
Amigo was a wonderful ambassador for horses and AAE, and his patient and kind personality made him the perfect horse for new volunteers to learn and enjoy. There wasn't a mean bone in his body, and he sincerely enjoyed every interaction with every one of his people.
At 34 years old, Amigo was the oldest horse at AAE. We are so lucky we were able to share the past 5+ years with him. See you on the other side, sweet boy. We all miss you beyond words.
On Thursday, July 13, Laughs Unlimited Comedy Club and Lounge in Old Sacramento is hosting a comedy show fundraiser for AAE! Doors open at 7pm, show starts at 8pm.
Tickets are on sale now, $20, and $20 of every admission benefits to AAE! Last years event was a blast. Join us if you can!
