As Legislative Session Begins, Right-Wing and Anti-Government Militia Founder Joins Government

Seattle, WA – On the first day of the Washington State Legislative Session, Washington Democrats are reminding voters that State Representative Matt Marshall from the 2nd Legislative District is an Ultra-MAGA White Christian Nationalist who founded the Washington Three Percenters, which hate-watch organizations like the Anti-Defamation League describe as part of the right-wing anti-government militia movement. In 2021, the Canadian government officially listed U.S. Three Percenters as a terrorist entity.

While Representative Marshall claimed to have resigned from the group in 2020, he continued to report serving as public affairs officer with Three Percent of Washington on his financial affairs disclosures through 2023 per the Public Disclosure Commission.

Beyond founding the right-wing, anti-government group before his election to Washington state’s government, Representative Marshall defended disgraced former Representative Matt Shea and shared Shea’s social media posts claiming a “Biblical Basis for War.”

State Representative Marshall joins State Representative and WAGOP Chair Jim Walsh as the latest purveyor of anti-government and anti-democratic sentiment in the House Republican Caucus. State Representative Walsh is known for his active membership in far-right facebook groups touting COVID conspiracy theories and a chapter of Ammon Bundy’s People’s Rights network.

“Washington’s democracy requires elected officials who fundamentally believe in democracy,” said Shasti Conrad, Chair of the Washington State Democrats. “Washington’s Republican Legislative Caucus continues to add members who defend domestic terrorists, embrace conspiracy theories, and spout disturbing rhetoric that threatens Washingtonians. Every Washingtonian should call upon Republican Leadership in the State House of Representatives to publicly denounce the misinformation and hateful rhetoric spewed by their members.”
