It's Healthcare, Not Healthscare

A Message from CEO Dave Ressler

In a few weeks, we will have ghosts, goblins, witches, superheroes and a variety of other little characters roaming our neighborhoods in search of sweets and treats. Since we first arrived in Aspen nearly two decades ago, with our own candy beggars, my wife and I have noticed this valley really enjoys celebrating Halloween. One thing that Halloween has never been for me is spooky.

Healthcare, on the other hand, can be very spooky to most. There is much we don’t know and don’t understand about our own bodies, including how we age and when we will be diagnosed with something scary. In today’s internet era, we often double-down on our fear when we conduct our own internet searches and discover all the horrible experiences that others have had with seemingly (but not necessarily) similar symptoms or diagnoses. It’s like reading ghost stories that conjure up dark and horrible possibilities.

SCOUT: A New Guide in Breast Cancer Treatment

Among the latest technological upgrades at Aspen Valley Hospital’s Breast Center, the SCOUT® radar location system transforms patient care at a critical time in a patient's breast cancer journey.

Typically, surgeons perform lumpectomies after multiple diagnostic breast procedures, including a biopsy and a diagnosis of breast cancer. What was once an arduous process to prepare a patient for surgery is now a reduced to… a grain of rice.

The SCOUT® reflector system uses radar detection instead of the traditional wire and radiation system (used by surgeons for generations) to guide them to the tumor.

Transformational Care

The Hospital’s primary care practice, Aspen Valley Primary Care, fills out its slate with Dr. Patric Knecht, who previously practiced family medicine for three years with a diverse patient base in New York. He joins the Aspen and Basalt-based team of doctors that includes internists, family medicine practitioners and a pediatrician.

“This is my first time working directly in the same practice as physicians trained in a specialty other than my own, family medicine,” he says. “I’m excited to be able to draw from and consult with my internal medicine and pediatric colleagues, as we all bring different training and experiences to the practice.”

Getting Ready for Ski Season

Proper preparation is the key to enjoying your time on the slopes! It takes at least six weeks to get in shape for ski season. Not only should you strengthen your legs, but you should also focus on "core stability," which means strengthening your abdominal and back muscles. A strong core means stronger balance, and stronger balance means easier skiing. Use these exercises to be in top shape your first time back to the hill this season.
