MADISON, Wis. — On this Valentine’s Day, we’re revisiting one of Wisconsin’s oldest love stories: the love affair between Brad Schimel and the far-right special interests he serves.
Brad Schimel was generous with his love for the far-right as attorney general, and his courtship has only continued as he runs for the state Supreme Court. From doing the bidding of Big Pharma to gut Wisconsinites’ health care, to attacking voting rights (and equal rights), Brad Schimel’s devotion to right-wing special interests is a tale as old as time—if a poorly written one at that.
“Brad Schimel’s courtship with the far-right is less a love story and more a Shakespearean tragedy,” said Democratic Party of Wisconsin Deputy Communications Director Haley McCoy. “Throughout his career, Brad Schimel has been more concerned with pleasing right-wing special interests than doing what’s right for Wisconsin, forcing working Wisconsin families to pay the price for his ill-fated adoration.”
Here’s more about Brad Schimel’s love for far-right special interests:
- Brad Schimel has earned the backing of Pro-Life Wisconsin, an extreme anti-choice group that supports passing a total, no-exceptions abortion ban and wants to ban contraception and IVF services.
- As attorney general, Brad Schimel bent the knee to Big Pharma and led a lawsuit to overturn the Affordable Care Act and rip away health care from hundreds of thousands of Wisconsinites. Schimel called the ACA a “train wreck.”
- Brad Schimel employed voter suppression tactics as attorney general and from the bench as a circuit court judge, siding with right-wing legal groups to declare ballot spoiling illegal and reopening an investigation into unproven voter fraud claims.
- Brad Schimel’s campaign is funded by far-right megadonors like Dick and Liz Uihlein and Dianne Hendricks, who have used their fortunes to prop up everything from conspiracy theorist Ron Johnson and election denier Eric Hovde to the Stop the Steal protests in Washington.
- Brad Schimel opposed granting basic marriage equality to LGBTQ+ and interracial couples—including voting against marriage equality himself.
- And just yesterday, Brad Schimel earned the endorsement of the NRA, the right-wing special interest group responsible for the epidemic of gun violence plaguing Wisconsin children, families, and communities.
