Schools and Libraries
August 25, 2023
From: Broward County Library - Main BranchIt’s hard to believe that this year has rushed by so quickly that it’s already fall. Where I’m from in Georgia, we have four seasons that visibly change. Florida seems to have two seasons, hot and hurricane – but honestly, I love it here, mainly for the people I meet at Broward County Library (BCL).
I’ve met a lot of nice folks at library programs. I especially enjoy talking with people who attend my Director’s Book Club, so allow me to extend a warm welcome to you. Drop in and chat about this month’s selection, I'm Glad My Mom Died, by Jennette McCurdy. Don’t let the title throw you - it’s a terrific memoir, full of candor and dark humor. Join me to talk about it at the El Aleph Coffee Haus in the Costa Hollywood Beach Hotel, at the North Lauderdale Saraniero Branch or online. I’d like to hear your take and I look forward to meeting you!
Another thing I have pleasurable expectations about is Hispanic Heritage Month, September 15th – October 15th. Although we honor the culture throughout the year, staff find extra ways to celebrate with exhibits, games, crafts, storytimes, films and more. Special live performances coming up include a concert at Weston Branch, From Spain and Beyond: A Musical Journey from Spain to the Americas, and an electrifying evening with Gladius, an award-winning composer and classical/flamenco guitarist at the North Regional/Broward College Library. Little ones can look forward to bilingual fun with “Señorita Marci, Mexican Adventure!” at Lauderhill Towne Centre Library.
September has the kids back at school, and a collective sigh from relieved parents has risen over Broward. Should your child need help, remember that the library offers free tutoring and academic support for all ages, from first grade to college and beyond, all year round with Brainfuse, one of many resources offered by our Youth Services section.
Youth Services also offers one of my favorite programs for child literacy, Wags and Tales. Children ages 5 to 12 practice and improve their reading skills side by side with a friendly, gentle dog from the Humane Society's Pet Facilitated Therapy program. My own dog Kaylee, adopted from the Humane Society, is jealous of the pet therapy pooches hearing stories and collecting cuddles.
Before I close, I’m going to give you a big share: It’s National Library Card Sign-Up Month. Wow, we love that here! We can’t wait to invite you into the BCL family if you’re not already a card-carrying member. Do you have friends or neighbors who haven’t been taking advantage of their library privileges? It’s so easy to get an e-card or a physical card with an amazing design statement. Pick one that expresses you and join the party! Paul Simon’s song says there are 50 Ways to Leave Your Lover - but we have that beat with 52 Ways to Use Your Library Card (scroll to bottom of page). Find a few more ways for yourself.
Wishing you a smashing September and a fabulous fall!
