Carr declines to join 22 other AGs fighting to protect their states from devastating Trump cuts. Georgia universities received $780 million in NIH funding in past year.
Georgia Republican Attorney General Chris Carr declined to join 22 other state attorneys general fighting to protect their states from Donald Trump’s devastating funding cuts to the National Institutes of Health – even though Georgia receives hundreds of millions of dollars per year in NIH funding that creates thousands of jobs and powers live-saving medical research.
Georgia universities received $780 million in NIH support in the past year for critical health research — a list led by Emory University, the University of Georgia, Augusta University, and Georgia Tech — money that is now on the chopping block thanks to the Trump administration’s indiscriminate and reckless slashing of NIH funding. The funding cuts imperil research on health crises from cancer to Alzheimer’s to infectious diseases and threaten funding of nearly 12,000 Georgia jobs. While Chris Carr managed to find time to sue the Biden administration in its final 48 hours, he again failed to stand up for thousands of medical researchers, universities, and patients who rely on research funded by the NIH in Georgia.
This isn’t the first time Carr has declined to join other states in standing up to Trump’s attempts to unilaterally freeze all federal grant funding, allow unelected billionaire Elon Musk to access citizens’ social security numbers, and re-write the Constitution to abolish birthright citizenship.
“Attorney General Chris Carr is missing in action, again, as Donald Trump tramples Georgians’ rights and recklessly slashes programs we rely on every day,” said DPG spokesman Dave Hoffman. “As Attorney General, Chris Carr has proven time and again that his most important client is himself, not the people of Georgia – and that’s why Georgians can’t trust him to be governor.”
Here’s a recap of Chris Carr’s politically-motivated court record.
