Arts and Entertainment

January 21, 2025

From: City Island Theater Group

THE STORY:

A young nun is accused of murdering an infant she gave birth to in a cloistered convent. The psychiatrist assigned to her case meets opposition in the convent’s Mother Superior, and all three women explore questions of Faith, Memory, and the meaning of Sainthood.

SEEKING:

Doctor Martha Livingstone – (Woman, 40's+) A practical middle-aged psychiatrist, she is appointed by the court to assess Agnes’s sanity. She becomes enchanted by the complexity of the situation and struggles to separate her personal trauma from that of the present situation, leading her to forgo professionalism and push to uncover the truth.

Mother Miriam Ruth – (Woman, 60's+) Considerate and patient Mother Superior of the convent. She is quick-witted and willing to defend her beliefs. She has lived a long and complicated life, full of deep sorrow. She finds hope in the purity of Agnes, and tries desperately to cling to her personal ideals.

Agnes – (Woman, Late teens - mid 20’s)  A seemingly naive young woman, she has fully devoted her life to serving God as an escape from her troubled past. The action of the play centers around uncovering the truth about her pregnancy, of which she claims to have no recollection. Singing ability is a plus but not required as she often sings hymns in various languages.

All ethnicities & gender identities are encouraged to submit.
