From: City of Aransas PassWe have started 2023 strong with training. So far this month, we have already completed several diverse training courses. We are also in the final preparation mode for this year's Crystal Bath Memorial TCO Symposium, which will be happening on February 16th and 17th.
On Friday, Jan 6th, we held two classes on "The Duty to Intervene," taught by Omar Rivera, an instructor with Texas Police Trainers LLC. and a training officer for the El Paso Police Department. These classes brought skills and knowledge to the attendees to equip them with what they need to know about their responsibility to intercede if excessive force is being used. This course also reviewed relevant case laws and use of force policies.
On Monday, Jan 9th, we hosted South Texas Combatives for one of the several defensive tactics classes we host each year. This course covered Police Response to Resistance and Aggression, which adds to the defensive tactics training we hosted last year. This class had officers from APPD, Ingleside PD, and Port Aransas PD.
Jan 10th-12th, our own TCO / Officer Flowers instructed the TCIC/NCIC classes. These classes are required for all Police Officers, Jailers, and Communications Officers. Depending on the level of certification, students attended 1, 2, or all 3 days.
On the 13th, Capt. Jones, HESO McCarty, and TCO Flowers instructed the CPR and Cardiac Emergency Communications (T-CPR) course. Twenty area dispatchers received either a new or recertification in CPR, and 25 have now been trained on pre-arrival CPR instruction.
This week we have been completing driver training. Capt. Jones and Sgt Davila instructed 10 of our officers on the Emergency Vehicle Operator Course. The course focuses on safe driving, driving under emergency circumstances, crash avoidance, and proper backing.
For our dispatchers, police officers, and other first responders, registration is still open for the Crystal Bath Memorial TCO Symposium. Click Here to go to our training calendar for more information.
