Carpinteria Flood Watch Begins Friday

Carpinteria will be under a Flood Watch issued by the National Weather Service beginning on Friday, Feb. 24 at 4 a.m. and currently forecast to last until Saturday, Feb. 25 at 6 a.m. Excessive runoff may result in flooding of rivers, creeks, streams and other low-lying and flood-prone locations. Those living in areas prone to flooding, and in and below recent burn areas, should stay aware of changing conditions and be prepared to take protective actions such as moving to high ground. Carpinterians are welcome to come pick up sand bags from the Public Works yard at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave., to protect their property from flooding. 

Extreme cold temperatures, continued wind, and rain are possible through the weekend. The National Weather Service has also issued a Blizzard Warning for the county’s interior mountains beginning on Friday, Feb. 24 at 4 a.m. and possibly lasting through Saturday, Feb. 25 at 4 p.m. This means that the county’s interior mountains (not the coast) could experience heavy snow with winds gusting up to 75 miles per hour with near zero visibility. Please avoid traveling in these dangerous conditions.

Time to Leash Up at El Carro

While the City of Carpinteria works toward permanent solutions for off-leash dog recreation, dog owners are required to keep their pets on a leash at El Carro Park. Off leash use at the City park has created numerous incompatibility issues with neighbors and other park users. For now, leashing is required in all parks and public places in the City of Carpinteria. Our Code Enforcement officers are educating the public about leashing requirements now in place, and after an educational grace period, owners of off-leash dogs will be ticketed for failing to comply with muicipal code (see details HERE). Dog owners are reminded that there is an off-leash area at Toro Canyon Park and several off-leash areas in Santa Barbara, including the Douglas Family Preserve and Mackenzie Park.

Santa Barbara County Flood Control (SBCFC) estimates that ongoing debris basin clearing and sediment placement at Carpinteria City Beach will be completed on March 2 with cleanup extending into March 3. Trucks bringing sediment from Gobernador Basin now will use Palm Avenue and Sixth Street to access the beach neighborhood. Since the operation began on Jan. 17, sediment cleared from Toro Canyon, Santa Monica, Arroyo Paredon and Gobernador debris basins has been transported from the basins to the beach. In coordination with the City of Carpinteria (City), SBCFC’s work to restore capacity and functionality to the debris basins also returns the natural rocks, gravel, and sand to Carpinteria City Beach, where this sediment material would otherwise naturally flow without the benefit of the basin.

Carpinteria Community-wide Cleanup

In partnership with Carpinteria Beautiful, the City of Carpinteria will hold a Community-wide Cleanup on Saturday, March 25 from 9 a.m. to noon. Volunteers should meet at the City parking lot at the Amtrak station before being assigned a litter pick-up location elsewhere in the City. This is a drop in event; come for 30 minutes or the entire time!

Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection Event

This year’s free Annual Household Hazardous Waste Collection event for the residents of Carpinteria will be held on Saturday, April 8 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at City Hall, 5775 Carpinteria Ave. Residents are invited to drive through and drop off items for disposal in the City’s Public Works Yard. Details coming soon.
