Wednesday: Ceremonial removal of utility pole to finish Tewa Court/10th Street project

Please join us for the ceremonial removal of the final utility pole of the Tewa Court/10th Street Utility Undergrounding Project 2 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 8, at the intersection of 10th Street and Highland Avenue.

The project began in June 2022 and included 1,345 feet of trenching to accommodate electricity and communications wires. On Wednesday, members of the public are invited to watch as the last of 10 poles is taken down.

Funded by Measure Q, a one-cent sales tax measure approved by Del Mar voters in 2016, the Utility Undergrounding Program envisions parceling Del Mar into eight districts to remove utility poles and replace overhead cables with underground lines.

Design work is underway for two other areas: the Stratford South District between 4th and 10th streets and the Crest Canyon district along portions of Crest Road and San Dieguito Drive.

Sheriff's lieutenant says to beware of crimes of convenience and opportunity

A lieutenant from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station is reminding residents and business owners to beware of crimes of convenience and opportunity.

In a recent crime of convenience in Del Mar, a burglar gained access to a home using a garage door opener left inside an unlocked car. Prevent crimes by locking your cars and homes and make sure items of value are not left in plain sight inside of vehicles, Lt. Christopher Lawrence said.

On the commercial side, the lieutenant recently reported to Del Mar Village Association that burglars are gaining entry to businesses using keys from lockboxes, which are easily defeated with a crowbar.

Best practices for business owners are to lock doors and windows, activate alarm systems and install high-definition cameras that can capture a suspect's face and vehicle license plate, the lieutenant said.

More dye released with Scripps study

Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers completed fieldwork at Torrey Pines State Beach this week with a second and third release of brightly-colored, nontoxic dye on Wednesday and Thursday.

The experiment, which included a release of Rhodamine WT dye last month, is designed to study the interaction of fresh water in the surf zone and how it transports pollutants, sediment, nutrients and other materials.
