Arborist to treat palms for pest
Historic Canary Island date palms on Coast Boulevard and at Powerhouse Park are showing early signs of possible infestation by the South American palm weevil.
A City contractor is set to begin treating the trees within the next month.
The contractor, West Coast Arborists, has identified 25 trees to treat with a pesticide application to the crown and drenching with a nutrient solution at the base of the trees.
A common ornamental tree, the Canary Island date palm often is trimmed to enhance the pineapple shape at the bottom of the crown. A tree showing 30 feet of trunk is about 60 years of age.
Infestations have been reported throughout the region.
Browning and wilting of the lower fronds are early indications of a weevil infestation.
Residents are encouraged to inspect their own trees and contact a licensed arborist if they observe browning or wilting.
Jan. 28: SANDAG coming to farmers market to present pedestrian options for railway
With the public comment period for the Coastal Connections Conceptual Planning Study set to close next week, a SANDAG project team will present information and answer questions from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 28, at the Del Mar Farmers Market, 1050 Camino del Mar.
In the draft Coastal Connections Study, SANDAG has brought forward seven potential options for pedestrian access along the Del Mar bluffs. The options include a combination of trails, crossings, ramps and stairs to the beach.
The study covers 1.6 miles of railway between Coast Boulevard and Torrey Pines State Beach.
The comment period for the study closes on Jan. 31.

CEA approves rate adjustment
The Board of Directors of the Clean Energy Alliance voted unanimously Jan. 26 to approve new rates for customers in Del Mar and the six other cities the agency serves.
The new rates take effect Feb. 1, 2023.
The increase enables the CEA to cover its costs while continuing to provide cheaper rates than those of SDG&E.
For most Del Mar customers, the CEA estimates savings of $20.43 per month when compared with SDG&E's charges.
The CEA provides electricity from renewable sources to customers in Del Mar, Carlsbad, Escondido, Oceanside, San Marcos, Solana Beach and Vista and is governed by a City Council member from each of those cities.
The rate increases are tied to rising electricity prices driven by spikes in natural gas prices and power supply shortages resulting from drought conditions and heat waves in September.
Pink plume at Torrey Pines State Beach is part of Scripps study
Did you see the pink plume last week in the near-shore waters off of Torrey Pines State Beach?
Scripps Institution of Oceanography researchers released a brightly-colored, nontoxic dye to study the interaction of fresh water in the surf zone and how it transports pollutants, sediment, nutrients and other materials.
Two additional dye releases are scheduled in the near future.
