Dear First District Family & Friends,
December is here, and many of the holiday events that we haven't experienced in 2-3 years have returned. This month will be a busy and festive one. Safety tips for the holidays related to trees, candles, and other items are available via this link: Holiday Fire Safety (after you click the link, scroll down to find the tips). Let's keep an eye out for one another while we are out and about, and also when we are at home in our neighborhoods.
Along with the San Gabriel Valley Habitat for Humanity team, multiple project partners, numerous volunteers, and city staff members, I had the pleasure of participating in a home dedication event and welcoming two Pasadena families to homeownership in the First District on Saturday, December 3! A photo collage from the home dedication event is included below. The property on which these two homes now exist was once blight in the community. It was previously a liquor store that was a nuisance. Once the liquor store burned down, neighbors moved quickly to engage the city. The city purchased this property with housing dollars with the goal of eventually turning this site into housing. An amazing opportunity presented itself with Habitat for Humanity. I worked with city staff, neighbors, and SGV Habitat to explore possibilities. The city transferred ownership of the property to Habitat in order to build two homes for sale. I am grateful to all of the neighbors who helped make the dream for this property a reality. These two beautiful homes will be where these families create memories. The homes will also serve to help the families to build generational wealth.
Being part of expanding the American dream of homeownership for families is something that brings me great joy. To witness this project as it has developed has been inspirational. I'm pleased that these two families are so close to moving into their new homes. What a way to end one year and begin a new one. I wish them all of the best in this new chapter of their lives and offer them a very warm welcome to the neighborhood.
Last month I shared that my alma mater, John Muir High School, won a CIF Southern Section water polo championship. I am excited to share that since winning that championship, the mighty Mustangs have won a CIF Southern Section football championship, a CIF state regional semifinal, and are one game away from winning a CIF state final championship! I'm so proud of these football players and their coaches. They have persevered through adversity and long season. They continue to work hard and demonstrate dedication to their goal. The Muir Mustangs will take on the Hughson Huskies on Saturday, December 10 at 6:00 PM at Hughson High School (near Modesto). Go 'Stangs!
Our community caroling caravan will return this year on Sunday, December 18 from 5:00 to 8:30 PM. Please save the date and see the flyer included below for more information.
If you haven't already signed up, it's the last call to register for the annual First District Rose Ticket Lottery. The registration link is included below. Entries will be accepted through tomorrow Sunday, December 4
