January 23, 2023
From: City of RichmondOn Thursday, January 26th, Mirabeau B. Lamar Day. On that date in 1839, the Republic of Texas Congress passed The Education Act, setting aside land for public schools. It was President Mirabeau B. Lamar, second President of the Republic of Texas who successfully argued the importance of public education and proposed the first actions that laid the foundation for a public school system in Texas. His accomplishments earned him the title of Father of Education in Texas. A 10:30 am graveside ceremony will take place on Thursday, January 26th at Morton Cemetery. I will be delivering a proclamation, as will Senator Lois Kolkhorst and State Rep. Jacey Jetton. Historian Michael Moore will be this year’s Mirabeau B. Lamar speaker with several other performances by various organizations. If you have a chance, join us to witness this unique ceremony.
