Most cases in the U.S. have been mild to date, though the infection can be painful.

As of 8/30/22, there are TWO probable cases of monkeypox in Eastern Jackson County.* In general, the current risk to Jackson County residents remains low. There are at least 7 cases of monkeypox reported in the KC Metro. Within the region, 4 cases of monkeypox have been identified in Kansas City, MO; 1 case has been identified in Johnson County, KS; and 2 cases have been identified in Eastern Jackson County

Eastern Jackson County is defined as all parts of Jackson County, excluding the city limits of Independence and Kansas City.

The following precautions are important:

How it spreads:

Direct contact with infected lesions, rashes, scabs, or fluids

Contact with contaminated materials like clothing or linens

Respiratory droplets from prolonged face-to-face contact (monkeypox is not thought to be transmitted in the same way as COVID-19)
