New updates to tobacco license ordinance

Tempe City Council’s Human Services and Human Safety Committee is moving forward with a focused approach to a proposed ordinance that aims to decrease youth tobacco and e-cigarette use. The updated proposal would establish a tobacco sales license, enact fees to ensure compliance and raise the minimum age of tobacco purchase to 21 years old.

Next, the city will engage in a second public involvement process to solicit feedback about changes to the proposal. Two meetings and an online survey will be held in March.

After the public engagement process in March, the ordinance could be brought to the full Council for discussion at a future City Council meeting, potentially in April or May. Then, pending Council consensus, any new fees would be posted on the city’s website for 60 days before a vote is taken.
