GEM SHOW SEASON CONTINUES IN TUCSON - The 2023 Gem, Mineral, and Fossil Showcase is underway, continuing through Sunday, Feb. 12. The original public show that started it all, The Tucson Gem & Mineral Show, operated by the Tucson Gem & Mineral Society (TGMS), opened today, Feb. 9, at the Tucson Convention Center, running through Sunday, Feb. 12 (link below). This year’s TGMS Show theme is “SILICA - Agates and Opals and Quartz, Oh My!” The best information about all of the shows is available in the Official Gem Guide (link below). This guide is hosted and operated by VisitTucson and is developed in partnership with the City of Tucson every year. It provides clear information on show locations, hours, parking and transit connections, and if the shows are open to the public, wholesale only, or open to both. It is one of the most important ways that the City supports this annual international event in our region.

BLACK HISTORY MONTH PROFILE: BUFFALO SOLDIERS MEMORIAL IN TUCSON (VIDEO) - Ward 5 Tucson City Council Member Richard Fimbres, the Greater Southern Arizona Area Chapter (GSAAC) of the Buffalo Soldiers, and Tucson Parks and Recreation unveiled the Buffalo Soldiers Memorial in May 2021 to honor the contributions of Black Americans in defense of the nation and the settling of Southern Arizona. The memorial is located at the Quincie Douglas Center, 1575 E. 36th St., in one of the oldest historically Black neighborhoods in Tucson.

HHW/DOCUMENT SHREDDING EVENT THIS WEEKEND - The City of Tucson's Environmental and General Services Department (EGSD) is hosting its monthly Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Collection Event this Saturday, Feb. 11, from 8 a.m.-noon, at Pima Community College West Campus, 2202 W. Anklam Road. City residents can drop off HHW, electronic waste, paper documents for shredding (limit 3 boxes), and glass bottles and jars at no charge. Unknown chemicals will not be accepted. The event is free for City of Tucson residents with proof of address. Residents from Marana, Oro Valley, Sahuarita, and unincorporated Pima County will be charged a $10 fee to drop off materials. EGSD hosts HHW collection events on the second Saturday of every month in different areas across Tucson. Follow the links below for more information.

PARTICIPATE IN THE WARD 4 NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP THIS WEEKEND - Join the Ward 4 team and volunteers Saturday morning, Feb. 11, as they continue to work with the Corbett Neighborhood Association, with support from the City Manager's Office and Environmental and General Services Department (EGSD), to finish alleyway cleanup along Craycroft. Staff and volunteers will clean a heavily overgrown area that has historic crime problems. Meet up Saturday at 2132 S. Jefferson before the 9 a.m. cleanup starts. Parking will be available nearby. HIGH-EFFICIENCY CLOTHES WASHER AND TOILET REBATES - Tucson Water customers can apply for rebates when purchasing and installing a qualifying high-efficiency clothes washer and/or toilet. Single-family rebates are $100 for the purchase of a qualifying high-efficiency clothes washer or if you're replacing your old front-loading machine with a new front-loader. Get a $200 rebate if you're replacing your old top-loading machine with a new front-loader. Residential, multi-family, and commercial customers can also get a $100 rebate when buying Premium High Efficiency toilets.
