March is Women’s History Month in the United States, an opportunity to recognize and honor the ways women have shaped the nation and its culture.
Formal recognition of women's contributions began in the late 1970s, and this year’s theme of “Celebrating Women Who Tell Our Stories” is especially befitting of the Library.
Many are familiar with the Suffragist movement and the 19th amendment that solidified women’s voting rights, but the story doesn’t start or end there. We invite you to explore the diverse and wide-reaching impacts women have had on each of our lives, and what it means for the future. The Library of Congress has compiled a treasure trove of resources that includes primary sources and archives, virtual photo albums, and documentaries. The Black Women's Suffrage Digital Collection features resources highlighting the contributions of Black women to the movement.
In addition to these resources, our team of librarians has compiled a list of excellent reads for adults, teens, and children, with titles that reflect how varied women’s experiences and perspectives can be. No matter the hardship or triumph, women have always been integral to American History, and Darien Library is thrilled to connect you with their stories.
