Chicago’s Unpredictable Lake Levels
EHS President John Holden will be lead a discussion with long-time Edgewater community residents Thom Greene and Paul Boyd about how the community responded in the 1980s to address Edgewater’s lakefront crisis caused by the rising waters of Lake Michigan. As a reporter, John covered the record high lake levels and wild winter storms of the 1980s that lashed Chicago’s lakefront and led to initial efforts to find permanent solutions for Chicago’s vulnerable lakefront infrastructure. In early 2020, John curated an exhibit on Lake Michigan’s oscillating water levels and the havoc it caused, and he will display highlights from the exhibit.
