Galerie Lelong & Co., New York and Paris, are pleased to participate in Art Basel 2023 with works from our international program by Etel Adnan, Pierre Alechinsky, Leonardo Drew, Günther Förg, Ficre Ghebreyesus, Jannis Kounellis, Ana Mendieta, David Nash, Jaume Plensa, Tariku Shiferaw, Nancy Spero, Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum, Antoni Tàpies, Barthélémy Toguo, Juan Uslé, and Fabienne Verdier.

Highlights from our booth include a painting by Tariku Shiferaw, marking the artist’s first presentation in Basel, Switzerland. Cruisin’ (D’Angelo) (2022) is from the artist’s ongoing series One of These Black Boys consisting of paintings with backgrounds of expressively painted bright blues marked by bands of varying shades of black that represent the spectrum of Blackness. The titles of works in this series pay tribute to musical genres that have originated in Black communities, charging the works with musical references, identities, and cultural histories.

A new work by Leonardo Drew will be presented at the fair. A grid-like composition of wood, plaster, and paint, Number 379 (2023) is demonstrative of Drew’s practice of transforming raw materials to create abstract forms that play upon a tension between order and chaos. This past March, Drew created a monumental new installation for the 18th-century Chapel at Yorkshire Sculpture Park entitled Number 360 (2023), composed in part of plywood repurposed from an earlier work, Number 341 (2022), on view during last year’s edition of Art Basel: Unlimited.

Signal (2023), a painting by Pamela Phatsimo Sunstrum, will make its debut at our booth. Throughout her multidisciplinary practice, Sunstrum calls upon memories of her transnational upbringing, as well as practices of mythology and geology, to craft terrains that appear simultaneously futuristic and ancient and set the scene for her characters: a cast of bodies in constant flux amidst ever slipping and insufficient notions of self-hood and belonging. A selection of Sunstrum’s paintings were included in the 15th Sharjah Art Biennale (SB15) (2023), and an installation by the artist will be on view at the Tate Liverpool as part of the 2023 Liverpool Biennial. Sunstrum will also show a new solo project at Bloomberg SPACE in London, England later this year.

These new works will be complemented by rarely exhibited historic works on paper by Ana Mendieta and Nancy Spero. An untitled ink on paper by Ana Mendieta sees the artist recontextualize her signature sculptural forms in two dimensions. Ana Mendieta: Search for Origin, a solo exhibition opening June 3 at MO.CO. Panacée in Montpellier, France, will feature over a hundred works, including a dozen across mediums that have never been exhibited: drawings from the artist's archive, paintings made between 1968 and 1970, photographs from recently discovered slides, and a reconstruction of the "environment" Untitled: Silueta Series, originally created in 1978 at the Amelie A. Wallace Gallery, State University of New York, Old Westbury, Long Island. In Rite (1997), a large handprinted work on paper by Nancy Spero, the artist draws upon her “stock company” of found imagery representing women throughout history to create rhythmic, colorful scenes that foreground women’s experiences, elevating their status from “other” to protagonist. A dedicated presentation of works by the artist is currently on view at the Tate Modern in London within the Artist and Society collection display.
