Fort Walton Beach Library Newsletter - January 2023

Schools and Libraries

January 4, 2023

From: Fort Walton Beach Library

The library will be closed on January 2nd and 16th.

Martin Luther King Jr Day is a federal holiday marking the birthday of Martin Luther King Jr. President Ronald Reagan signed it into law in 1983, and it was first observed 3 years later. At first, some states resisted observing the holiday, giving it alternative names or combining it with other holidays. It was officially observed in all 50 states for the first time in 2000. Former Senator Harris Wofford and Congressman John Lewis transformed the holiday into The Martin Luther King Day of Service; a day of citizen action and volunteer service in honor of King.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day on January 27th commemorates the victims of the Holocaust. January 27th was when the Auschwitz concentration camp was liberated by the Red Army of the USSR in 1945. The day remembers the killing of 6 million Jews and millions of others by the Nazi regime. It was designated by the UN in 2005, the 60th anniversary of the liberation of concentration camps. International Holocaust Remembrance Day encourages educational programs to prevent future acts of genocide, rejects denial of the Holocaust, and condemns religious intolerance, harassment, or violence against people. It calls for preserving the Holocaust sites that served as Nazi camps and prisons.
