From: Fort Walton Beach LibraryHobbit Day is September 22nd, the birthday of Bilbo and Frodo Baggins, from J.R.R. Tolkien's The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. The American Tolkien Society defines Hobbit Day as September 22nd, and Tolkien Week as that same week. Due to discrepancies between the Shire and Gregorian calendars, there's debate about when to celebrate, since the birthday would be between September 12th and 14th. Fans celebrate by emulating hobbit parties or going barefoot.
International Literacy Day is September 8th. 775 million people lack minimum literacy skills; 1/5 of adults aren't literate and 2/3 of them are women; 60.7 million children aren't in school and more attend irregularly or drop out. There's a connection between illiteracy and countries in severe poverty and between illiteracy and prejudice against women.
Patriot Day is on September 11th in memory of the attacks in 2001. The flag is flown at half-staff on government buildings. A moment of silence is observed to correspond with the attacks, beginning at 8:46 AM, when the first plane struck the World Trade Center. Patriot Day is not a federal holiday; schools and businesses remain open, although memorials for the 2,977 victims are held.
