From: City Of FriscoThe City of Frisco will host its 2nd annual Frisco Unity Day Honoring the Life and Legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. this Saturday, January 13 with a day of free activities including a volunteer service fair, musical performances, and a movie.
‘Unity Day’ will start at 9:30 a.m. with a volunteer service fair at Frisco City Hall inside the George A. Purefoy Municipal Center, 6101 Frisco Square Blvd.
Beginning at 10 a.m. - noon in the Council Chambers, a jazz quartet, featuring musicians from the University of North Texas, will take the stage.
A student finalist in the Linking Cultures of Frisco competition will perform a Dr. King oration.
Once the student orator’s performance ends, a gospel choir will follow. Following the musical performances, the City of Frisco will host a free showing of Selma at the Frisco Square Cinemark, 5655 Frisco Square Blvd. The motion picture “chronicles Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s campaign to secure equal voting rights via an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, Alabama, in 1965 (IMDb).”
The free movie starts at 1:30 p.m. and will be shown in two theatres. Tickets are free; however, seating is first come, first served. The theatre is next door, a short walk from City Hall.
Organizations participating in the service fair include the Frisco Inclusion Committee; the Frisco Police Community Foundation; Frisco Education Foundation; Frisco Family Services; Frisco Heritage Association and the Frisco Garden Club.
Beginning Tuesday, January 16, you can drop off canned and packaged food items which will benefit Frisco Family Services. Bins will be located inside City Hall. Collection will continue through Friday, January 19.
Additionally, Unity Day will launch a scholarship benefiting the Frisco Education Foundation in honor of Clara and Jimmy Jones. “My favorite Dr. King quote is ‘We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now’,” said Mayor Jeff Cheney. “We’re proud to host Unity Day for the second year and this year, promote volunteering because we’re all connected in our service to our city.”
In observance of the Martin Luther King Jr. holiday, the City of Frisco government offices will be closed Monday, January 15. Regular hours resume Tuesday, January 16.
