About Lev Meshberg
Lev Meshberg (1933-2007) was a Ukrainian-American painter known for his autobiographical works filled with personal symbols and enigmas. A figurative painter and colorist, his paintings blend recognizable objects with dream-like, ethereal light and color.
He added physical depth to his art by layering pigments and materials, creating a sculptural effect that gained worldwide attention. Meshberg’s originality and unique three-dimensional approach to painting earned him worldwide attention with numerous exhibitions and collectors globally.
Born in Odessa, Ukraine, on April 15, 1933, Meshberg began painting in childhood, winning first prize in the Ukrainian Annual Art Contest at 13. He studied at Odessa College of Fine Art and earned top honors. In 1960, he joined the Union of Soviet Artists, and in 1967, he was recognized as one of Russia’s top six painters.
In 1973, Meshberg and his family emigrated to the U.S., joining other Soviet artists as a way to escape the difficulties of being an “unofficial” artist during the time of the social realism dominance in the USSR. He participated in over forty exhibitions in the Soviet Union, winning prizes at two All-Union Art Exhibitions (1965, 1967).
Meshberg taught privately and worked in Darien, Connecticut, and New York City until 2001, when he moved to Carrara, Italy, where he lived until his death on July 17, 2007.
