The Gibbs Diesel Mechanics Center had its grand opening on Wednesday, January 29 in the Welding/Auto/Manufacturing building at Ventura College. Hosted by the Ventura College Foundation, more than 60 guests attended the celebration including instructors, students and dignitaries.

In the last 10 years, Oxnard-based Gibbs International Truck Centers has donated $1.3 million in financial and equipment to support the two-year program. Since the program began in 2015, the company has donated commercial diesel trucks, engine blocks, tools and lab space, and helped write the curriculum and hire instructors. It provides paid internships and scholarships to students in the program and has hired graduates.

“There are 1.9 million commercial diesel trucks in California and a shortage of qualified diesel technicians. It’s wonderful to see students learn and be inspired in the new lab, and then have the opportunity for a lucrative career,” says Ed Gibbs, Gibbs International Truck Centers president. “We’re honored and thank the college and foundation for celebrating the opening of the Gibbs Diesel Mechanics Center on campus.”

The center offers two certificate programs--Diesel Engine Repair and Medium and Heavy-Duty Vehicle Repair--and an Associate of Science Degree in Diesel Mechanics.

“The transportation, agriculture and construction industries all depend on diesel-powered equipment,” says Blane Schloo, lead faculty at the center. “High-tech skills are just as important as hands-on training. Modern diesel engines and vehicle systems incorporate advanced electronics, emissions controls, and computerized diagnostics. Technicians need to be proficient with diagnostic software, electronic systems, and telematics to stay ahead in the industry.”

The Ventura College Foundation helped coordinate the Gibbs International Truck Centers donations over the years.

"Gibbs International Truck Centers has been involved in the diesel mechanics program at Ventura College since its beginning,” says Anne Paul King, Ventura College Foundation executive director. “We are grateful for its continued support and thrilled to see their generosity recognized. Diesel mechanic jobs are well-paying careers. The students who graduate from the program stand out in the job market.”
