Kim Reynolds has ordered all flags in Iowa to fly at half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Saturday, November 16, 2024 to honor fallen MMN2 Petty Officer Second Class Elijah Hummel of Altoona. Hummel died on November 8, 2024 from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident. He was serving at the Naval Submarine Base in New London, Connecticut.
MMN2 Petty Officer Second Class Elijah Hummel was assigned to the USS Idaho SSN 799. He was responsible for the operation of naval nuclear propulsion plants. MMN2 stands for Machinist’s Mate Nuclear Second Class. Hummel is from Altoona and attended Iowa Christian Academy and Des Moines Christian School. He was 21 years old.

Burial will be at the Iowa Veterans Cemetery in Adel, Iowa.
Flags will be at half-staff on the State Capitol Building and on flag displays in the Capitol Complex. Flags will also be half-staff on all public buildings, grounds, and facilities throughout the state.
Individuals, businesses, schools, municipalities, counties, and other government subdivisions are encouraged to fly the flag at half-staff for the same length of time as a sign of respect.
