From: Ohio Governor Mike DeWineOhio Governor Mike DeWine on June 11th, announced the appointment of Rebecca Bennett to the Scioto County Court of Common Pleas, Probate and Juvenile Division.
Bennett, of Portsmouth, will assume office on July 22, 2024, and will be taking the seat formerly held by Judge R. Alan Lemons, who retired. She will serve the remainder of the unfinished term and will need to run for election in November 2024 to retain the seat.
Bennett began her law career as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Scioto County in 1992. In 1999, she became a law associate for the law offices of Stephen C. Rodeheffer until 2002 where she returned as an assistant prosecuting attorney for Scioto County. In 2005, she became an assistant prosecuting attorney for Adams County before becoming an assistant city solicitor and prosecutor for the city of Portsmouth in 2011.
From 2002 to 2015, Bennett was a practicing attorney in areas of custody; abuse, neglect, and dependency; divorce; wills and estates; civil litigation; and juvenile delinquency. Since 2015, She has served as a magistrate for the Scioto County Court of Common Pleas, Juvenile and Probate Division.
She is a two-time graduate of Capital University where she received her bachelor's degree in political science in 1984 and juris doctor in 1988.
Professionally, Bennett is a member of the Ohio Association of Magistrates, Ohio State Bar Association, and the Scioto County Bar Association. In her community, she is a member of the Portsmouth Rotary Club, CRADLE Pregnancy Care Center, and the Temple Baptist Church and currently attends Grace Community at Bigelow Church.
