MISSOULA, MT - Governor Greg Gianforte today joined volunteers at The Salvation Army to help pack and distribute gifts to Montana families in-need in Missoula.

“For over 150 years, The Salvation Army has spread cheer during the Christmas season and provided year-round support for families in-need,” Gov. Gianforte said. “I was honored to spend time today packaging and handing out Christmas gifts to Montanans today.”

The Salvation Army Northwest helps people overcome poverty, addiction, and economic hardships through a range of services. The organization also provides food for the hungry, clothing and shelter for the homeless, disaster relief, senior outreach, adult rehabilitation, and programs for children.

In Missoula, the corps provides homeless individuals access to a hygiene center that includes laundry facilities and free meals as well as hosts weekly programs for families such as bible study and tutoring for children.

Thanks to the generosity of local businesses such as Scheels, Walmart, The Ranch Club, and Parkside Credit Unions, The Salvation Army was able to provide over 150 children with toys this Christmas.

Joining Majors Monica and Robert Covert and Salvation Army volunteers, the governor helped pack and distribute gifts to registered families.

“These gifts represent more than toys – they are a reminder that every child deserves to feel loved, valued, and celebrated all year. This work is only possible thanks to the generosity of local donors, volunteers, and organizations who support these efforts,” the governor said.

Last year, the corps served over 700 families in the Missoula area. This year they expect to surpass that number.

“I was the youngest of eight, raised by a single mother, and we lived across the street from the Salvation Army growing up. And as a result, I had a great childhood because The Salvation Army was there not only for resources, but also for programs and just a lot of fun activities. And now, today, after all these years, I'm able to give back and it's a wonderful thing when you can do that,” said Major Monica Covert.
