Middletown, CT - Late last week, Governor Lamont’s Psychiatric Security Review Board granted Tyree Smith, a murderer and cannibal, a conditional release, allowing him to leave Connecticut Valley Hospital in Middletown. Smith confessed to and was sentenced for the 2011 killing of a homeless man in Connecticut, in which he ate the victim’s body parts.

“The Lamont-appointed Psychiatric Security Review Board decided to release onto the streets a murderer and cannibal – a man who killed another person with an axe before removing parts of his brain and organs to eat them. This decision is mind-boggling. Smith is dangerous, and the absolute last thing we should do is release him into our communities,” said Connecticut Republican Party Chairman Ben Proto.

“In the latest line of insane decisions following President Biden’s pardon of Adrian Peeler, it’s clear Connecticut Democrats are more concerned with protecting criminals than law-abiding citizens. I am calling on Governor Lamont to intervene and overturn the decision to release this murderer and cannibal.”

“Because of Governor Lamont and Connecticut Democrats’ poor leadership, Connecticut continues to face a public safety crisis. Governor Lamont and Attorney General William Tong continue their efforts to derail President Trump’s and the American people’s agenda. They invite illegal aliens, including criminals, to come to Connecticut, putting Connecticut citizens more at risk; they reject the will of the American people in favor of pushing their far-left progressive party politics. Now, because of their failed policies, we have to worry about horrific criminals like Tyree Smith attacking and killing other innocent people,” said Proto.

“Going forward, the Psychiatric Security Review Board must prioritize public safety during their hearings. If public safety truly were prioritized, Tyree Smith would never have been granted a release in any form. At its most basic level, the role of government is to keep its citizens safe and secure. State officials in Connecticut must finally start fulfilling that role,” concluded Proto.
