From: West Virginia Governor Patrick MorriseyThe Governor proposes additional protections for the upcoming legislative session
CHARLESTON, WV – On Feb 5th, Governor Patrick Morrisey joined President Donald J. Trump at the White House for the signing of an executive order to keep men out of women’s sports. The signing coincides with National Girls and Women in Sports Day.
“I’m proud to stand alongside President Trump to protect women’s sports,” said Governor Morrisey. “Radical gender ideology has created an unsafe and unfair environment for female athletes, forcing them to compete against biological males. I am grateful that we now have a President who will fight to protect women and girls in sports and ensure they have their own private spaces.”
Governor Morrisey is also calling on the state legislature to pass additional protections for women, including to define sex-based terms such as “woman,” “man,” “girl,” and “mother;” allow for facilities such as locker rooms, bathrooms, domestic violence shelters and rape crisis centers to be based on biological sex; and to prohibit unfair treatment or discrimination against males or females.
“I look forward to working with President Trump, Riley Gaines, and other leaders to advance our shared goals,” said Governor Morrisey.
Governor Morrisey has a long history standing up for women and girls in sports. Last year, then-Attorney General Morrisey appealed to the U.S. Supreme Court to validate West Virgnia’s law requiring transgender athletes to base their participation on their biological sex. This case still sits before the Supreme Court. As Attorney General, Morrisey also successfully challenged the Biden administration’s rewrite of Title IX, which wrongly expanded the definition of “sex” to include “all gender identities.”
