WHO: Gregory Harris is the Donald and Marilyn Keough Family Curator of Photography at the High Museum of Art in Atlanta, Georgia. He is a specialist in contemporary photography with a particular interest in the documentary practice.

WHY THIS MATTERS: Museums throughout the world understand the power of photography, yet each institution's focus is unique. Some museums focus locally, while others collect across the spectrum, from the earliest image to the latest creation. The High Museum of Art is located in Georgia, a state known for its civil rights history and importance in the South, which is evident in the photographic collection.

DEEP DIVE: The High Museum of Art began collecting photographs in the early 1970s, making it among the earliest museums to commit to the medium. With more than 8,500 prints, the photography department is the museum’s largest collection. It is particularly strong in mid-twentieth-century American modernist and documentary imagery as well as contemporary photography.

Please listen and share. It's only 12 minutes.
