Hawley Led Extreme Effort To Block Passage of The Right to Contraception Act

Government and Politics

June 6, 2024

On June 5th, Josh Hawley & Eric Schmitt voted to block the passage of the Right to Contraception Act, despite Missouri being home to one of the most extreme and cruel, near-total abortion bans in the country, which makes no exceptions for rape or incest. Led by Hawley, Missouri Republicans have consistently doubled- down on their war against reproductive and family planning freedom since Roe was overturned in June 2022.

This year, Hawley himself was revealed to be one of the pioneers of a nationwide push to restrict access to in vitro fertilization care, while his wife worked to outlaw a reliably safe miscarriage management medication. Over this year's state legislative session, Republicans reaffirmed their commitment to cruelty, voting against allowing abortion exceptions in cases of rape or incest and against protecting contraceptives and IVF services.

“Access to contraception is essential for Missouri families to ensure control of their lives and their ability to plan for their futures,” said State Representative Jamie Johnson (Kansas City, District 12). “Extremist politicians, like Josh Hawley, know that voters across the political spectrum want the government to stay out of their personal healthcare decisions and support access to contraception. Instead of working to improve access to quality, affordable healthcare, Missouri Republicans have been working relentlessly to attack our rights and gut access to basic care.”
