ALL FIRED UP!

Fired Up: Juried Show of The Cape Cod Potters

July 23 - October 31

with Juror, Kathy King

Be sure to visit Highfield to see this multi-artist exhibit which celebrates the diversity of ceramic work being created on this small, sandy spit of land! Cape Cod’s unique geography can inspire and constrict, can push artists to explore their local influences, and can lead them to reach beyond their geographic boundaries. Each of the many potters living and working on Cape Cod bring their own unique voice to the medium of clay. This show highlights the best of that energy!

The show was juried by Kathy King, Director of The Ceramics Program at The Office for The Arts at Harvard who said “Once I began the process, I was quickly struck with how immersive and challenging this experience would be. Because of the many exceptional works, I looked for works with a strong concept, a clear sense of materiality, and the technical and structural needs of working with our chosen medium - ceramics.”

JOHN MURELLE IN CONCERT (GREAT AMERICAN SONGBOOK)

August 25 2024

4:00 pm - 6:00 pm

$25/ $35 Non-member

Join vocalist John Murelle and pianist Chris Morris for an evocative two-part show including “With a Song in My Heart!” ~ The Songs of Rodgers & Hart and “Blue Skies” ~ Irving Berlin: The Man and His Music.

Both Irving Berlin and the song writing team of Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart were innovators of musical theater during the first part of the 20th century. Rodgers & Hart had wit and sophistication, while Irving Berlin wrote hit songs that almost everyone whistled and sang. Rodgers & Hart and Irving Berlin shared Broadway and the airwaves at the same time during this era. While their songs are quite different in style and tone, they do share the Tin Pan Alley sound in much of their work.

Singer and historian, John Murelle has been sharing his knowledge and musical performances with audiences throughout New England for years. His passion and understanding of the men and women who have created and shaped the American art form know as American Musical Theater is both engaging and highly enlightening. His singing harkens back to the Golden Age of musical theater when performers filled the space with a rich, vibrant sound.

GARDEN TIP FROM GEORGE CHAPMAN

FENNEL IN GARDEN DESIGN

Texture, defined in the Webster dictionary as a composite of the elements, is what makes a good garden “great.” The combination of foliage such as the bold, broad leaf of hosta, strap shape leaf of daylily, lance shape leaf of tall phlox and the star shape leaf of perennial geranium create an artistic composition in the garden.

One of my favorite plants that adds an unusual and airy element to the summer landscape is the herb fennel (Foeniculum vulgare). Fennel is a tall growing, hardy perennial with feathery, threadlike foliage. Growing on strong stalks, it can reach a height of four to five feet, with bright yellow flowers appearing in midsummer.

This plant is a host to the swallowtail butterfly and is a favorite of pollinators because of its upright, umbel flowers. The varieties ‘Rubrum’ and ‘Purpureum’ do all of the above with the addition of adding bronze to red foliage to the garden.
