New Acquisition: Mr. Beebe’s Trunk Travels to Highfield
We are pleased to announce the latest acquisition of a patent leather travel trunk that once belonged to James Madison Beebe. Despite signs of significant wear and tear, acquiring the only object to date that we know of once belonging to James Madison Beebe, is certainly worth mentioning. Marked with initials J.M.B. and dated 1873,it was likely made to carry papers, rather than personal effects of any kind. Made by Manufacturer of Trunks and Valises, Nathan Neat, est. 1825, located at 336 Washington Street in Boston; the trunk is covered in ‘solid sole leather’ and lined in plain woven linen, and measures, 15 ¾” W x 13 ¼” D x 11 ¼” H.
Contents found in the trunk consisted of two pieces of paper, one with the name E. Pierson Beebe, Esq Falmouth, written in ink, and a large plain envelope.
Highfield would like to thank our dedicated volunteers, Jennifer Walker and Sally Colacicco, whose generosity allowed Highfield to purchase the trunk to rejoin the Beebe Archive.
Work continues on our archives and invite you to come see the new permanent galleries, House of Dreams, a retelling of the history of Highfield Hall and Summer Salon, where we have been able to include information recently learned about the Beebe family.

JAZZ TALK WITH BILL MILKOWSKI
September 22, 2024
4:00 pm - 6:00 pm
$20/ person
Join award-winning author Bill Milkowski for Jive Chronicles: Resurrecting Jazz’s Forgotten Entertainers, a journey through jazz history as he uncovers often overlooked entertainers who brought ebullience and humor to the stage. From the 1920s to the 1940s, musicians like Cab Calloway, Fats Waller, Slim Gaillard, and Louis Jordan captivated audiences with their lively performances, yet their contributions to jazz have been minimized by critics and historians.
The emergence of a more “serious” aesthetic in the 1950s, exemplified by Miles Davis’s innovative approach, marginalized these entertainers, dismissing them as outdated. Drawing from his book “Swing It! An Annotated History of Jive,” Bill will delve into their lives and stories, highlighting their enduring charm, significance, and lasting impact on jazz. Accompanied by video and wrapped in engaging Q&A, Bill will engage the audience in a journey back in jazz!
This program is offered in collaboration with Falmouth Jazz.

GARDEN TIP FROM GEORGE CHAPMAN
CHOP AND DROP
Chop and drop is a garden maintenance technique that is both labor saving and beneficial to the garden soil. Usually reserved for the fall, it involves cutting down garden vegetation and leaving it in place, much like Mother Nature does in fields and forests.
This final removal of fall vegetation usually involves head shears, weed trimmers or lawn mowers. A modified version can be practiced with a pair of pruners. Summer garden maintenance includes removing spent flower heads from plants such as astilbe, heuchera, euphorbia, rose bushes and phlox. This garden debris tends to be on the smaller side and is beginning to break down, making it the perfect candidate for the chop and drop technique.
While not always appropriate for formal gardens or walkway beds, with a bit of discretion, chop and drop can be practiced all season long.
