Join us for Qi Gong in the beautiful gardens of Highfield Hall. This summer we will offer two 4-week sessions of relaxing, centering, Qi Gong with Margie Mitchell.

Our introductory class has SOLD OUT, but we have highlighted the class dates below. The practice of Qi Gong integrates the mind, body, and spirit energies through breath work, gentle stretching, warm-ups, “flows”, and meditation to promote wellness, increased vitality, and overall sense of wellbeing. Margie Mitchell is Holden Qi Gong certified.

CELEBRATE PRIDE AND THE 50th ANNIVERSARY OF PFLAG

Kick off Pride month and learn about PFLAG on their 50th anniversary. Joe Lima, President of PFLAG Cape Cod since 2019, will talk about PFLAG, its history, mission, and vision.

Originally an acronym for “Parents and Friends of Lesbians and Gays”, PFLAG now encompasses even more as the largest organization in the US for parents, families, and allies to provide support and resources as well as education and advocacy. The local PFLAG chapter is active up and down the Cape, providing valuable resources, offering a supportive community, hosting a podcast, and awarding scholarships to high school seniors who have been advocates for equality.

Whether you’re already involved in LGBTQ+ matters or want to learn more, please join us for this presentation to celebrate our community. As Joe says: “We welcome anyone and everyone who would like to be a part of our community.”

POP UP CULINARY WITH JENNY SHEA RAWN

Join us on the porch to meet cookbook author, Jenny Shea Rawn, cooking with Gail Blakely, and talking about her new cookbook, Coastal Kitchen, due out July 1st.

Together, Jenny and Gail will prepare a few seafood dishes, both from the book and from their personal recipe collections. Always a fun and tasty class, you’ll learn new tricks with seafood and sample some delicious dishes. Come back for the cookbook release event on August 1 for more treats!

As a media-trained Registered Dietitian, brand ambassador and nutrition communications consultant, Jenny has been featured in hundreds of national and local TV, radio, print, social media and online outlets.

FARM TO TABLE PROGRAM WITH GAIL

Each of our Farm to Table classes will include an appetizer, salad or soup, entrée, and dessert. We will also serve a refreshing beverage that utilizes fresh herbs and shows off some edible flowers. Gail has been growing herbs on Cape Cod for almost fifty years and will answer questions about herb gardening along with “all things culinary.” Guest chefs may join her, depending on their availability during our “high season.”

All classes are demonstrations with tastings, and specific menus will be posted prior to each class. Final menus are subject to change according to the guest chef and the availability of ingredients.

Please join Highfield Hall & Gardens on the grounds Sunday, June 25, from 11 AM to 2 PM as we celebrate our ever-loving canine companions! This outdoor family event honors the joy that dogs bring into our lives. Come and enjoy a tail-waggin’ afternoon as you meet other four-legged friends, fellow doggie enthusiasts, and local animal organizations.

From our fun costume parade contest to our hysterical agility course competition, Hounds of Highfield has something for everyone. This year we are featuring vendors such as Cape Cod’s own Green Road Refill and food trucks, The Filling Station, Ella's Wood Fired Pizza, and Sea Scoops!

Receive a “blessing of the animals” from Reverend Nell Fields of Waquoit Congregational Church and sit back on the lawn, listening to local musician Michael Oakland. A memorable day is planned at beautiful Highfield Hall for you.

Highfield Estate Tours Beginning

Estate walks lead by our talented volunteer docents are a great way to discover & enjoy Highfield Hall & Gardens! Docent-led estate tours are offered free with admission and are held on the FIRST and THIRD Sunday of each month, June – October from noon to 1:00 PM, weather permitting.

Space is available by pre-registration and first come, first served with a maximum of 10 people per tour.

Discover the fascinating history of the original owners, the Beebe Family, the house, and grounds. Discuss the exterior architecture and compare photos of the house throughout the past century. Hear the story of how this superb historic building was saved by grassroots community support. Learn about the tenacity and vision that continues as new research on the structure, its story, and that of the people who lived here add to the building’s significance.

Pre-scheduled private docent-led Highfield Hall & Gardens tours are available year-round for group tours of 5 people or more. Please call 508-495-1878 x 310 or email to schedule a tour. Please plan at least two weeks in advance for private tours. We also welcome bus tours with one month advance notice.

HIGHFIELD WELCOMES A SUMMER INTERN!

The curatorial department is excited to welcome Danielle Nutter, a senior at the College of the Holy Cross where she is concentrating in Peace and Conflict Studies within the History department. Danielle just returned from a semester in Washington DC interning at the National Fisheries Institute, where she also did coursework in public policy.

After being introduced to the house and its story, Danielle had a crash course in framing and art handling to help with the upcoming exhibition. Not to be missed was her walk on the grounds exploring the pathways and gardens, after which she declared the (beech) trees were her favorite of the day.

Fortunately Danielle loves history and can’t wait to delve into Highfield Hall’s archives and more this summer. Thank you for spending your summer here with us Danielle!

WINTER HYDRANGEA DAMAGE

I was at a Hydrangea Society meeting the other night, and the speaker did not beat around the bush when he spoke of the winter damage to the big leaf hydrangea, Hydrangea macrophylla. To quote the speaker, “dead is dead, the brown stems have to go."

Some gardeners have left the stems because of the presence of one or two small green buds. These buds will begin to open in May but will dry out in June. The sooner the brown stems are removed, the faster these plants will recover. Most of these damaged hydrangeas will send up new shoots from below ground and will grow to almost their normal size this season.

Depending on the variety, some will even produce a few flowers this fall. This was the hardest winter for these mophead hydrangeas that I have seen in my forty years here on the Cape. Some years they have been okay, some years good, and just a very few years they have been great. Hydrangea macrophylla, the mopheads, do have winter temperature issues.

For a tough as nails hydrangea, opt for the panicle hydrangea, Hydrangea paniculata. Varieties in this species will give you everything you want in a hydrangea (except, alas, the color blue!). Hydrangea serrata, the lacecap hydrangea, is another strong species with varieties that bloom in blue. For now, winter damage on Hydrangea macrophylla means brown is down.
