AURORA – On May 15, 2024, Governor Polis signed bills into law that will make Colorado safer and provide important investments into public safety and support for victims.

“Every Coloradan deserves the opportunity to live in a safe and healthy community. By investing in the resources to crack down on crime, we will help keep people and property safer across Colorado,” said Governor Polis.

In Denver at DriveSafe Colfax and Centennial at the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office, the Governor signed legislation focused on road safety and crime prevention:

·         SB24-003, Colorado Bureau of Investigation Authority to Investigate Firearms Crimes, sponsored by Senators Tom Sullivan and Meg Froelich, and Majority Leader Monica Duran. This legislation gives the Colorado Bureau of Investigation the tools and funding to crack down on illegal gun activity and protect Colorado communities.

·         HB24-1021, Motor Vehicle Minor Driver Education Standards, sponsored by Representative Mandy Lindsay, and Senators Faith Winter and Kevin Priola.

·         HB24-1432, Repeal CBI Criminal Justice Record Sealing Fee, sponsored by Representatives Chad Clifford and Matt Soper, and Senator Dafna Michaelson Jenet.

The Governor also visited the 18th Judicial District Building in Aurora to sign legislation that provides victims with proper retributions, and expands gun safety.

·         SB24-120, Updates to the Crime Victim Compensation Act, sponsored by Senator Rhonda Fields and Representative Shannon Bird. This legislation provides important support to victims of crime in Colorado.

·         HB24-1348, Secure Firearm Storage in a Vehicle, sponsored by Representatives Elizabeth Velasco and Lorena Garcia, and Senators Sonya Jacquez Lewis and Rhonda Fields. This legislation the responsible storage of firearms in vehicles to prevent theft and crime.
