BRING YOUR MARACA & BEACH CHAIR!

This is a simple, outdoor gathering in our Batey!

On October 8th, Yukayeke Yara Cu and Yara Taino & Guaytiao will hold a very special Taino gathering and ceremony in our Batey -- to honor special vistors, Carlos Aceves and Members of the Kalpulli Tlalteca People of El Paso.

In the Taino tradition, we invite the community to celebrate with us in a joyful Areyto (ceremonial dance).

WHY ARE THEY COMING?

Kalpulli Tlalteca People of the Earth is a Nahuatlaca community in far West Texas that began to reconstitute in 1978 to practice a ceremonial way of life rooted in Mexican Indigenous Tradition.

They are coming to Austin to bless our Taino Ancestors with a sacred reed bundle that, in the tradition of their people, is keeping count of the years of the current 52-year calendar.

In 2027, when the Pleaides reach their highest point, our Kacike & Spiritual Leader - Tekina-eirú Maynard, Yukayeke Yara Cu - will journey to El Paso with the reed-bundle for the Xiuhmolpilli New Fire ceremony that will mark the start of a new 52 year cycle. We are humbled and grateful for this invitation to be in solidarity with the Kalpulli Tlalteca and other invited tribal leaders for this sacred event!

So bring your maraca and beach chair, and join us on October 8, 2023 for this "once in a lifetime" Indigenous Heritage gathering in the Batey under the Pecan Trees of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, 701 Tillery Street, Austin TX 78702.

WHO ARE WE?

YARA TAINO & GUAYTIAO is the Indigenous community of the Puerto Rican Cultural Center.
