Dedicated to enhancing the quality of life in our community, Johnson County Park and Recreation District offers year-round program, activities, and special events for all ages!

To register by phone, call 913-831-3359. For all in-person programs, physical distancing and COVID-19 safe practices will be encouraged.

A reminder that while JCPRD’s 50 Plus programs are primarily for people who are age 50 or older, interested parties who have not yet reached that magic age may still be able to attend. Persons 18 and older who are interested in a 50 Plus class are invited to call the 50 Plus Department at 913-826-2975 for space availability.

Here's a sampling of programs JCPRD has coming up for the week of Oct. 30 - Nov. 5 

Oct. 31 - Special Event: Trick-or-Treat @ The Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center (All Ages)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, drop in between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m., Creepy Crafts and Monster Mash dance activities $5 per person

NEW! Join us for a spooktacular time on Halloween Day at JCAHC! Enjoy trick-or-treating at four stations around the arts and heritage center, learn how to dance like a monster during our drop-in Monster Mash class, and make some Halloween-themed art during our drop-in Creepy Crafts sessions. Craft sessions begin at 10 a.m. and  2 p.m.. Dance sessions begin at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. No advance registration required. 

Oct. 31 & Nov. 1 (four separate classes) - Dance: 50 Plus Tap - Beginning, Advanced Beginning, Intermediate, or Advanced (Ages 50 Older)

Matt Ross Community Center, 8101 Marty St., Overland Park, dates and times vary (see below), 6 sessions, $47 per person, $52 nonresidents

Learn basic tap fundamentals such as the Waltz, Clog, and Rhythm Time Steps in Beginner Tap. Stomp, shuffle, and stamp your way to the next level with Intermediate. Test out of Intermediate for Advanced. Hard-soled or tap dance shoes required. No previous tap dance necessary for Beginner. Beginning class meets 1:15-2:05 p.m. Mondays starting Oct. 31, activity number 23271. Advanced Beginning class meets 1:15-2:05 p.m. Tuesdays starting Nov. 1, activity number 23547. Intermediate class meets 2-2:50 p.m. Mondays starting Oct. 31, activity number 23273. Advanced class meets 3-3:50 p.m. Mondays starting Oct. 31, activity number 23275.

Nov. 1 - Day Trip: Hey Ike, The Phone’s For You (Ages 50 & Older)

Departs from Antioch Park, 6501 Antioch, Merriam, 7:30 a.m.to 7 p.m., $142 per person Visit Abilene, Kan., and tour the Eisenhower Museum and Library. Spend a moment at the Place of Meditation, where Ike and his wife are buried inside a beautiful stained-glass chapel. Tour the Museum of Independent Telephony to learn about the role of a telephone operator or dial a rotary handset, and see a recreation of an old telephone exchange. See how the telephone industry has evolved into what it is today. After, lunch at Ike’s Place, take some time to shop the various antique and collectable stores in downtown Abilene. Nov. 1 - Art: Painting & Collage (Ages 16 & Older)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 6 to 8:30 p.m., 4 sessions, $80 per person, $88 nonresidents

NEW! Combine painting and collage together to create a mixed media art piece. Students will learn basic painting techniques and explore a variety of materials; combining them to make cohesive art pieces throughout the class. No experience needed. All supplies included. Activity number 22919

Nov. 2 - Games: Bingo - Tailgate Party (Ages 50 & Older)

Tomahawk Ridge Community Center, 11902 Lowell, Overland Park, 1:30 to 3 p.m., $5 per person, $6 nonresidents

BINGO! Delight in food, prizes, fun, and 12 games of bingo. Variety of prizes awarded including gift certificates. Space is limited, register early by calling 913-831-3359. Cost of admission covers food and staff time to administer the bingo program. No additional charge for bingo. Activity number 23248. 

Nov. 2 - Games: Virtual Scattergories® (Ages 50 & Older)

Virtual Program, 10 to 11 a.m., FREE

Think fast and write quicker in this fun and fast-paced game of alliterative words and categories!  Zoom link will be emailed the day prior to the program. Zoom information is also on the receipt notes. Activity number 23286

Nov. 2 - Yoga: Rise and Shine Yoga (Ages 16 & Older)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, Wednesdays, 6 to 7 a.m., 4 sessions, $32 per person, $35 nonresidents

Start your day with an invigorating yoga practice at Ernie Miller Nature Center. This is yoga for anybody. All are welcome, no experience necessary! This class will focus on gentle stretching, serenity, and rejuvenation, and will be tailored to individual abilities. Please bring your mat to class. Meet at the parking lot flagpole to walk into the building together at 6 a.m. Instructor is Experienced Registered Yoga Teacher Robin Olson. Activity number 23376

Nov. 2, 16 - Preschool Storytime: Animal Tales (Ages 2-6 with an Adult)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, 10:30 to 11 a.m., $3 per person

Join a park naturalist for animal stories and surprises geared for preschool age children. Come listen, learn, and meet a special animal friend every time. Nov. 3 - Little Critter’s Day Out: Whoo Goes There? (Ages 3-5)

Ernie Miller Nature Center, 909 N. Kansas 7 Highway, Olathe, 9 a.m. to noon, $19 per person, $21 nonresidents

Your Little Critter will enjoy three hours of fun and education once as you enjoy some personal time! Activities will vary but we will have an adventure, eat a snack, make a craft, play games, and see an animal visitor each day. Dress for the weather. Nov. 4  - Family Fun: Bonfire Bash (All Ages)

Meadowbrook Park at the fire ring near Shelter #3, 9101 Nall Ave., Prairie Village, 5:30 to 7 p.m., $12 per person, $13 nonresidents, 20% discount for 3 or more participants

NEW! Nothing says fall like a bonfire! Participants with partake in nighttime geocaching in the park, have hot dogs over the fire, chips, and s’mores. Activity number 23166

Nov. 4 - Art: Clay Creations (Ages 3-7 with an Adult)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 10 to 10:45 a.m., $12 per child

Come get creative and explore clay. Students will get the opportunity to hand-build with clay and make one ceramics piece to be fired. Students will need an adult to attend class with them. Activity number 22791. 

Nov. 4, 5 - Art: Homeschool Mini Ornaments (Ages 6-17)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, $30 per child, $33 nonresidents

Make a series of mini ceramics ornaments for the holidays while exploring different ceramics tools and techniques. Ornaments will be fired in the kiln and ready for pickup around two weeks after the class date. Nov. 4 session, 1 to 3 p.m., activity number 22974. Nov. 5, 12 & 19 - Fall Public Hayrides (All Ages)

Oak Ridge Parklands in Shawnee Mission Park, 7460 Ogg Road, Shawnee, offered Saturdays from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m.; $10 per person, $11 nonresidents

Final public hayrides for 2022! Enjoy the outdoors with a hayride through Oak Ridge Parklands at Shawnee Mission Park. Your hayride concludes with a warm campfire where marshmallows and apple cider await. Advanced registration required. Children 2 and under are free. Nov. 5 - Art: Sewn Character (Ages 8-15)

Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center, 8788 Metcalf Ave., Overland Park, 1 to 3 p.m., 2 sessions, $40 per person, $45 nonresidents

NEW! Sew your own custom character to keep you warm during the winter months. Participants will learn basic hand sewing and surface design techniques like embroidery, button sewing, and beadwork during this class. Our teaching artist will be there to guide you through the process, so no experience needed. Activity number 22972.
