“How Did the United States Constitution, When First Enacted, Address The Issue of Slavery.”

The United States Constitution, the legal foundation of our country, emanates from revolutionary ideals of freedom, equality and liberty. Yet the juxtaposition of these ideals against the factual reality of slavery raises numerous questions.

How were the issues of slavery raised and debated by the Founding Fathers at the Constitutional Convention? Why didn’t the Constitution when initially enacted expressly provide for the prohibition of slavery? How did the Constitution itself address the issue of slavery?

In an engaging, challenging hour of discussion, Judge Barry Stevens will discuss these questions, emphasizing how the historical facts implicated by these questions in turn have modern implications.
