Susan Kehnemui Donnelly - 2023 - 1 hr 36mins - United States - English

A documentary about 43 immigrant families from tyrannical Russia to the desolate fields of southern New Jersey in 1882. This is an improbable story of the settlers, who were forbidden to own land in the old country, but were able to claim land in America, harness its bounty, and create a legacy that was reborn six generations later. Stay after the screening for a panel discussion with the film’s director, Susan Kehnemui Donnelly, the cinematographer, Ted Salins, and featured Alliance Community members. Dr. Thomas Kinsella, Director of Stockton University’s Alliance Heritage Center will moderate.

A difficult and flamboyant character, Roman Vishniac is best known for having traversed Eastern Europe with a camera from 1935 through 1938. On assignment for the American Joint Distribution Committee to document Jewish life in Eastern Europe, the purpose of the photographs was to raise funds for impoverished Jewish communities. Vishniac captured iconic images of Jewish life, from the cafes of pre-war Berlin to the shtetls of Eastern Europe. Few could have predicted that less than a decade later, these communities would be wiped out, and that Vishniac’s photographs would provide the last visual records of an entire world.

Avi Nesher’s quirky story of a teenage girl whose family migrates to Israel from India and ends up in a 1960s-era Negev development town. The film explores the hardships and surprises that come with the integration of multiple families from different ethnic backgrounds (from the diaspora) and their struggle with immigration and prejudice. The film is in Hebrew, French, English, Moroccan Arabic, and Hindi, a combination of languages that have likely never been featured in a single movie before, or since. Turn Left at the End of the World was selected as a "New Israeli Classic" in a special event by the Tel Aviv Cinemateque in October 2024 exhibiting the new digitally restored version made for the film's 20th anniversary.

The Commandant's Shadow is a 2024 documentary that focuses on the story of Jurgen Höss, the son of Auschwitz concentration camp director Rudolf Höss, and his boyhood home life in the villa adjacent to it. The film also stars Anita Lasker-Wallfisch, an Auschwitz survivor who meets face-to-face with Jurgen Höss decades later.
