America’s Golden Age of Printmaking Collection

Due to the generosity of one of our longtime clients, we bring you a special addition to our Summer Collection! These are highly collectible American printmakers’ works, ranging in subjects, techniques, and dates. All prints in this collection are dated from 1900-1960, the heyday of American printmaking. A few of these works are by students of Thomas Hart Benton, and it is evident in their style. We’ve got information on each print including the story behind the work as well as the printmaking process. One print even comes with a book! All available for purchase, contact Sarah for any inquiries.

Carlos Anderson was born in Midvale, Utah.  He studied at the University of Utah, The Los Angeles Art Institute, The Arts Student League of New York, The Academie Julian and The Ecole des Beau-Arts. His lithographs have a strong Thomas Hart Benton regionalist style influenced by his time at the Art Students League of New York.  His artwork is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Smithsonian American Museum of Art.

Lyman Byxbe was born in Pittsfield, Illinois.  He moved to Omaha, Nebraska in 1912 where he worked as a commercial artist for several firms while simultaneously honing his fine art skills.  It wasn’t until he was 40 years old when he was introduced to etching and printmaking.  Some of his most collectible prints came from his early years in Omaha.  In 1939, at the age of 53, he left Omaha for Estes Park, Colorado where he set up a studio and began making prints of majestic Colorado.  His enormous body of work make his prints truly collectible.

John DeMartelly was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.   This lithographic print “Give Us This Day” is one of  his most critically acclaimed expressions of regionalism.  It won First Prize in the Graphic Arts Division of the Midwestern Artists Exhibition in 1938.  It was also selected for the book “Fifty American Prints” and is featured in the book “Under the Influence, The Students of Thomas Hart Benton.” DeMartelly was a protégé of Thomas Hart Benton and later taught printmaking at the Kansas City Art Institute.

Kenneth Reeves was born in 1910 and graduated from the Chicago Academy of Fine Art.  In 1949, he moved to Brown county, Indiana which was the largest art colony in the midwest and began his life as a fine artist. Well known for his watercolors, he began working with aquatint etching in 1955. Other notable Brown county printmakers are George Jo Mess, Louis Oscar Griffith and Gustave Baumann.

What’S Sold

This has been a hot painting! We have had several clients interested, but one just had to have it in her collection!

This was a fun experiment for Lowe, mixing oil and acrylic paints as well as encaustic wax to create an energetic image. The client loved it’s colorfulness and energy - the perfect addition to her home.

A customer came in and loved Lowe’s Nautical Series that we have at the gallery, but wanted a larger piece for her space, so she commissioned Lowe for a custom piece and she loved it!
