Memphis, TN - One of Memphis’ most breathtaking natural displays has arrived-the Yoshino Cherry trees (Prunus x yedoensis) lining Cherry Road in front of the Memphis Botanic Garden (MBG) are anticipated to be in full bloom this weekend! These delicate, fragrant blossoms drape the trees in a soft pink veil, transforming Cherry Road-from Southern Avenue to Park Avenue-into a stunning springtime spectacle.

The Yoshino Cherry is one of the most celebrated ornamental trees in the world, famously known for its stunning presence around the Tidal Basin in Washington, D.C. These trees were originally a gift from Japan to the United States, symbolizing friendship and cultural connection.

Memphis’ own Cherry Road trees have a legacy dating back to the 1950s, when they were generously donated to the Memphis Botanic Garden by the Little Garden Club of Memphis. Since then, MBG has continued the tradition of replacing aging trees-typically with a lifespan of 35 years in Memphis-thanks to ongoing support from the Little Garden Club. Over the past 20 years, MBG has replaced approximately 30-40 Yoshino Cherry trees, ensuring this breathtaking display remains a staple of spring in Memphis.

Each year, Memphians gather under the blossoms to picnic, paint, and capture unforgettable family photographs. For a fleeting moment, these spectacular trees serve as a one-of-a-kind backdrop for springtime celebrations.

In celebration of these beautiful blooms, MBG will host its annual Cherry Blossom Picnic on Saturday, March 22, from 10 am to 4 pm. Visitors can enjoy:

- Live Performances – Featuring Stax Academy’s 901 Taiko drummers and The Skalars
- Family-Friendly Tea Ceremony Demonstrations, Activities, & Crafts
- Guided Tours of the Japanese Garden with Horticulturist Robin Howell
- Food Trucks & Cash Bar – Perfect for a spring picnic

Now is the perfect time to shake off the winter chill, welcome the warmth of spring, and experience the fleeting brilliance of the Yoshino Cherry trees in bloom at the Memphis Botanic Garden. Don’t miss this magical moment-visit soon before the blossoms fade!
