Missouri Democratic Party Celebrates Supreme Court Rejection Of The Hawley Family’s Latest Attack On Reproductive Freedom

Government and Politics

On June 13th, the United States’ Supreme Court unanimously upheld access to a safe and effective miscarriage management medication, throwing out Josh Hawley’s wife, Erin Hawley’s sham lawsuit to ban the medicine entirely. More than 6 million people have safely used this medication since it was approved by the FDA in 2000.

Earlier this year, Hawley himself was revealed to be one of the pioneers of a nationwide push to restrict access to in vitro fertilization care. Republicans in the Missouri State Legislature followed Hawley’s leadership and voted against protecting contraceptives and IVF services this legislative session in their crusade against reproductive and family planning freedom. These relentless attacks on basic healthcare services have had dire consequences in our communities as more than half of rural hospitals in Missouri no longer deliver babies and fewer and fewer future doctors are selecting Missouri to complete their residencies.

“Despite, Missouri being home to one of the most extreme and cruel, near-total abortion bans in the country, which makes no exceptions for rape or incest, the Hawleys have made attacking our rights to plan our families in private their business venture, and Missouri families are paying the price,” said Missouri State Representative and Secretary of State Candidate Barbara Phifer. “The Supreme Court’s unanimous decision to protect this medication is a major win, but extremist politicians, like the Hawleys, have demonstrated they are hell-bent on continuing these attacks. Instead of working to improve access to quality, affordable healthcare, Missouri Republicans have been working relentlessly to attack our freedom and gut access to basic care and have shown no signs of stopping.”
