NCGOP Commends General Assembly for Placing Citizen-Only Voting Constitutional Amendment on 2024 Ballot

On July 1, 2024 - The North Carolina Republican Party (NCGOP) commends the General Assembly for placing a Citizen-Only Voting Constitutional Amendment clarifying that only U.S. Citizens may vote in North Carolina elections.

The NCGOP was actively engaged in this important issue and commends both the N.C. House of Representatives and N.C. Senate for their support and votes.

The disastrous policies of President Joe Biden and Democrats who support his failed record have demonstrated this amendment is needed as they have shown no interest in solving the problems at the Southern border or in protecting the integrity of our elections.

"Ensuring that only U.S. Citizens in North Carolina can vote is a critical step that is needed in order to have confidence in our elections," said NCGOP Chairman Jason Simmons. "We applaud our Republican legislators in both chambers who worked hard in this effort and the NCGOP will put our full support behind this amendment in the November General Election."

Background:

Both the N.C. House and N.C. Senate introduced versions of the measure following concerns about non-citizen voting in other states and the unprecedented crisis at the Southern border that has seen over 10 million illegal immigrants enter the United States since 2021.

“Democrats in far-left cities and states are doing everything they possibly can to allow noncitizens to vote in elections. The best defense we can mount against these attacks on democracy is to empower the people of North Carolina to amend their own constitution to state that only U.S. citizens shall vote in our elections.” Sen. Brad Overcash (R-Gaston) has said previously.

“As absurd as it may be, noncitizen voting is growing in some parts of our country. Here in North Carolina, it's imperative we protect our election integrity and security, and establish citizen-only voting,” Sen. Buck Newton (R-Wilson) added.

North Carolina House Speaker Tim Moore said,

“In North Carolina, we value the integrity of our elections and have put safeguards in place to ensure our elections are secure. Recent efforts to allow non-citizens to vote would undermine the public’s confidence in our electoral system and leave the door open for chaos and election fraud to take hold. Preventing non-citizens from voting in our elections also helps maintain national sovereignty, as it prevents foreign influence from affecting the outcomes of American elections, and this amendment to our constitution would further strengthen election integrity in North Carolina,” said N.C. House Speaker Tim Moore.

“Tightening our elections laws so that only U.S. citizens are voting in this country ensures that those making decisions about our country’s future have a vested interest in its well-being. Voting is a fundamental right and privilege reserved for citizens of the United States, and I am proud to support this effort to ensure the integrity of our elections,” added N.C. House Rules Chairman Destin Hall.
