LINCOLN, NE – The Nebraska Democratic Party Chair Jane Kleeb issues the following statement regarding Donald Trump’s Joint Address this evening:
“A month into his second term, Donald Trump has been disastrous for Nebraskan families, our economy, and foreign policy. Instead of fulfilling his promise to lower costs, Trump’s policies and tariffs are set to raise prices – from housing to groceries to farm equipment – as he and Elon Musk have cut critical federal programs and rolled back protections secured by Democrats.
Promises were made to the American people to lower costs. Those promises were broken by Trump.
Trump and House Republicans like Don Bacon are pushing a budget that could rip health care away from some of the most vulnerable from seniors, children, and veterans in our state who rely on Medicaid and SNAP – all to give massive tax breaks to billionaires like Zuckerberg, Musk and Bezos. While Trump delivers inaccuracies and divisive rhetoric tonight, there will be no mention of his handouts to the richest one percent.
At this point in his term, Trump is the least popular president in modern American history and there is no question why: Trump continues to leave working Nebraskans in the dust. The working and middle class will foot the bill for corrupt billionaires to the tune of $4.5 trillion. His policies are so unpopular that House Republicans are now hiding from their constituents in their home districts rather than announcing town halls during the upcoming recess.
Democrats are fighting tooth and nail to fight back against Trump’s agenda and make life better for working families. If Republicans continue to hide and refuse to hold town halls, we will hold those community meetings to hear from the people about how Trump is hurting our pocketbooks and our families. We wait to see if Ricketts, Fischer, Bacon, Flood, or Smith have the courage to hold town halls and hold Trump and Musk accountable.”
