Government and Politics
February 27, 2025
OKLAHOMA CITY, OK – The Oklahoma Democratic Party stands in full support of the planned economic blackout initiated by The Peoples Union USA, scheduled for Friday, February 28, 2025. We encourage all Oklahomans to participate by spending no money at all for the day. If spending is absolutely necessary, we urge individuals to limit purchases to small, locally owned businesses to emphasize the economic power of everyday people.
This nationwide action aims to send a clear message to policymakers: the financial well-being of working families must be a priority. Everyday consumers drive the economy, and their voices deserve to be heard. The blackout highlights the real consequences of policies that ignore or harm the very people who fuel economic growth.
For Oklahomans, the impact of impending tariffs is a prime example. Canada is Oklahoma’s largest trade partner, and President Trump’s decision to impose new tariffs directly threatens our state’s economy—affecting businesses, jobs, and household budgets. From agriculture to manufacturing, Oklahomans will feel the effects of these policies both as consumers and producers. This blackout serves as a powerful reminder that economic decisions made in Washington have real consequences at home.
We call on all Oklahomans—regardless of political affiliation to stand together on February 28. By temporarily withholding our spending, we can demonstrate the strength of the people in shaping economic and political decisions.
