A former yard trash collector who climbed the ladder to become a utilities supervisor has been named the Town of Palm Beach’s employee of the year for 2023.

Reginald Williams, an 18-year veteran of the Public Works Department, received the honor Monday at a Palm Beach Chamber of Commerce breakfast at The Breakers.

Mayor Danielle Moore told the audience of more than 300 people that Williams’ unwavering integrity, strong work ethic and dedicated service to the town makes him a “shining example for all.”

“This outstanding individual not only volunteers first during storms and significant events but arrives early each day to ensure that everything is in order for the crew and stays late when needed, without hesitation,” she said.

A Belle Glade native who grew up in Palm Beach County, Williams began his career working at The Breakers while still a high school senior. He graduated from Forest Hill High School in West Palm Beach.

Williams joined the Town of Palm Beach in 2005.

“I started as a helper at the bottom, went to sanitation, came back to [the Water Resources Division of the Public Works Department] and worked my way up,” Williams said.

As utilities supervisor, he manages 13 employees who are responsible for maintaining roads, underwater pipes, and stormwater infrastructure.

Public Works Director Paul Brazil said Williams deserves the honor.

“He is one of the hardest working people that we have in Public Works, and probably in the town,” Brazil said.

Williams said he had no knowledge that he was to be named employee of the year until Moore made the announcement.

“I’m incredibly humbled and honored,” he said. “I would have never expected something like this.”

Williams lives in West Palm Beach and is married with a daughter. When he’s not working, he enjoys fishing and traveling with his family.

He is the 46th town employee to receive the honor since recognition began in 1978.

Award winners receive a plaque and a $3,500 check donated by the Palm Beach Civic Association and the Citizens’ Association of Palm Beach.

Moore thanked both organizations for their contributions.

“Your generosity and support for our hard-working staff plays a pivotal role in our town’s success,” she said.
