Charles Dickens has frequently been credited with inventing modern Christmas. As this article from the the Dickens Society explains, Oliver Cromwell viewed medieval and pagan activities as suspicious and purged many of them during the seventeenth century. By the time of the Industrial Revolution when Dickens lived, workers had scant time for celebration. Queen Victoria and Prince Albert laid the groundwork for reviving the holiday in the first half of the 1800s, and Dickens' groundbreaking 1843 masterpiece A Christmas Carol built upon and augmented this renewed interest.
