This Month at Pioneer Works

Second Sunday is Back 

This Sunday marks our first Second Sundays of the new year. Featuring a live performance from exhibiting artist Hprizm and a conversation between noted music journalists and sisters Liz and Jenn Pelly on the state of Spotify, we invite you to visit the open studios of our Visual Art & Music Residents, see our ongoing exhibitions, and learn about the world of fungi with the New York Mycological Society

Throughout March, we'll be kicking off a suite of programs that build off the themes present in American Artist's solo exhibition and project, Shaper of God. Next Friday, we'll celebrate the launch of American Artist's debut monograph with a conversation between Artist and Martine Syms. On March 23rd, Jazsalyn will lead another activation of Black Beyond's Warpmode with special guests Zeba Blay and SCRAAATCH, and we'll also be hosting a special Science vs Fiction conversation with writer N.K. Jemisin on April 1st. 

Later this month, we'll present concerts featuring: Astrid SonneBlack EyesDreamcrusherEMELJules ReidyRasha NahasTarta Relena, and more!

Sunday, March 9 between 12–6 pm

Join us at Second Sundays for a day-long queue of performances, activations, workshops, and exploration including: Open Studios with PW Residents, an array of activations from the New York Mycological SocietyBroadcast Radio Hour with music journalists Liz and Jenn Pelly, and more! Find out when you join us for a conversation that delves into the intricacies, biases, and potentials of artificial intelligence between two of the world’s leading voices on AI: Ruha Benjamin and Kate Crawford. ?

Tuesday, March 18 at 8 pm

Tunisian-American artist EMEL returns to the Pioneer Works with her powerful blend of electronic and North African influences, alongside Palestinian singer, composer and actress Rasha Nahas in our North Hall.

Warpmode: Afropocalypse
Sunday, March 23 at 4 pm

For the third session in this series, Jazsalyn and American Artist will engage the theme of Afropocalypse, using the latter artist's exhibition Shaper of God as a contextual reference. The program will be moderated by film and cultural critic Zeba Blay, and feature a musical intervention by SCRAAATCH.

Astrid Sonne, Tarta Relena, and Jules Reidy
Tuesday, March 25 at 8 pm

Pioneer Works presents a lineup that explores forms of experimentalism, pop, and minimalism, featuring Danish composer and sound artist Astrid Sonne, the Catalonian duo of Marta Torrella and Helena Ros better known as Tarta Relena, and UK-based artist and composer Jules Reidy in the North Hall.

Black Eyes & Dreamcrusher
Saturday, March 29 at 8 pm

Pioneer Works is excited to welcome post-punk luminaries Black Eyes back from Washington, D.C, with an opening performance from New York City-based noise artist Dreamcrusher, in the North Hall. Don't wait—tickets are limited for this special show.

American Artist: Shaper of God 
On view through April 13, 2025

Comprised of video, sculpture, drawing, and installations, Shaper of God is a multidisciplinary project by American Artist that evokes the radical possibilities of community and destiny that science fiction writer Octavia E. Butler presented to us in her writing.?

Hprizm: Sound of the City
On view through May 11, 2025

Hprizm’s practice spans a wide array of genres, including music, performance and multimedia installations. Sound of the City presents an immersive audio installation of his work collecting the sounds of New York City. This Sunday, March 9th, join us for a guided walkthrough of his exhibition and a live musical performance.

Yehwan Song: Are We Still (Surfing)?
On view through May 11, 2025

Yehwan Song is known for her critical interventions in reshaping the ‘user-friendly,’ yet hostile interfaces that have overtaken the internet. Her solo exhibition, Are We Still (Surfing)?, comprises video installation and kinetic sculptures, all embodying the self-sustaining, algorithmic system intentionally designed to immerse, stagnate, and overwhelm web surfers.

Science vs Fiction: N.K. Jemisin

Few authors have reshaped the landscape of speculative fiction like N.K. Jemisin. In the spirit of the visionary Octavia E. Butler, Jemisin crafts worlds both familiar and fantastical, unearthing the deep connections between humanity, power, and the systems that bind them. Next month, Jemisin joins PW Director of Sciences, Janna Levin, for our signature series, Science vs Fiction
